Genomics group at the CRIBI Biotechnology Center

About us

This websites hosts the N. gaditana genome projects of the Genomics Group of the CRIBI Biotechnology Center, University of Padua.

The Research Group

The Genomics Group is composed by a sequencing core facility (equipped with a SOLiD 5500xl and a Ion Proton, both by Applied Biosystems), a molecular biology and biotechnology laboratory and a bioinformatics unit. The bioinformatics unit focuses on de novo genome assembly, gene prediction and annotation, as well as re-sequencing projects.

N. gaditana genome project

This microalga, under certain conditions such as nitrogen deprivation, can harvest a high fraction of light energy into lipid droplets (up to 70% of its dry mass). This feature made it an ideal candidate for biofuel production research, and thus we decided to sequence its genome and perform several transcriptome studies.

We use solid standard tools for most goals, such as the GBrowse from GMOD and the MetaCyc (database of nonredundant, experimentally elucidated metabolic pathways).

Besides, we develop and maintain custom tools to better serve the community: we developed a query platform to retrieve annotated genes statisfying multiple requests, a contigs browser to assist scaffolding of unfinished genomes, as well as a custom BLAST to Browser interface and other accessory tools.
